How to Find the Perfect Pair of Sunglasses
Sunglasses are my number one fashion hack to feel like I have my life together. The right pair of sunglasses can completely shift the vibe of your entire look. They’re one of my favorite accessories because they’re low-effort – you don’t have to worry about matching or styling them with your clothes – but super high reward. Just throw them on, and any outfit – yes, even sweatpants – feels more intentional and put-together.
The tricky part is finding "your" pair. There are a lot of options out there, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed, especially when you're shopping online and can't just try on a pair from the rack.
So, I created the ultimate guide to help you find your perfect pair of sunglasses that you'll actually reach for, season after season.
Start With Your Face Shape
The first step is understanding how the shape of your sunglasses works with your natural face shape. Different faces call for different sunglasses. What looks stylish on one face might fall flat on another. Finding the right shape that harmonizes with your features will instantly boost the wow-factor.
Heart-shaped faces (wider forehead, narrower chin) tend to look beautiful in frames that are wider at the top, like cat-eye, brow-line styles, or a retro square. The visual weight at the top balances the delicate point of the chin in a way that feels very chic and intentional.

Round faces have soft, even proportions, which means angular or horizontal frames create a really striking contrast. A square or oversized silhouette adds structure that plays up your natural softness beautifully. Cat-eye styles are also ultra-chic if they’re the right size for your face (more on that below).

Oval faces are lucky because most silhouettes work. But especially well-suited are aviators, oversized frames, and retro squares. If you have an oval face and you've been hesitant to try a bolder shape, this is your invitation.

Square faces with strong jaw lines and prominent cheekbones look incredible in softer, rounder frames. Aviators, rimless styles, round lenses, and butterfly frames all bring a certain ease to a more angular face. The contrast is effortlessly cool.

Not sure which face shape you have? Go to the mirror and with a bar of soap, washable marker, or even an old lipstick, trace the outline of your face in the mirror. This helps you really see the shape. It sounds silly but it works!
Consider Your Skin Tone
You want your sunglasses to accentuate your natural coloring. So start by figuring out your skin's undertone. Cool undertones have pink or bluish hues. Warm undertones lean peachy, golden, or yellow. Neutral tones are a mix of both.
A quick trick: look at the veins on your inner wrist. Blue or purple means cool, greenish means warm, somewhere in between means neutral.

Cool skin tones tend to glow in frames with blue, grey, indigo, or deep purple tones. Eggplant and steel grey are especially elegant choices.

Warm skin tones look luminous in amber, tortoiseshell, caramel, walnut, or anything in that rich, earthy family. There's something so warm and inviting about a classic tortoiseshell frame on warm skin.

Neutral skin tones have the flexibility to pull from both palettes. Softer options like pearl, blush, white, or warm nude frames tend to be especially flattering.

And then there are the lenses themselves.
- Grey lenses are a clean, true-to-life choice for everyday wear since they reduce brightness without shifting colors.
- Brown lenses add warmth and enhance contrast, especially outdoors.
- If you spend a lot of time near water or in intense sun, polarized lenses are worth it.
- Mirrored lenses are perennially stylish and mysterious in a cool-girl way.
Get the Scale Right
I’ve heard it a lot. You found the right shape and… but something’s still off. That means the dimensions are probably wrong for your face. Frames that are too small can look pinched, and frames that are too wide lose their polish.
Here’s a quick guide to help you find your right size. Measure the width of your face from temple to temple:
- 4.5 inches: look for frames in the 49–51mm range
- 5 inches: 52–53mm tends to work well
- 5.25 inches: 54–55mm
- 5.5 inches: 56–57mm
- 5.75 inches: 58–59mm
- 6 inches: 60–61mm

If you already own a pair of glasses that fit well, check the inside of the arm. You'll often find a set of numbers like 54-18-131, which tells you the lens width, bridge size, and temple length. Knowing that number is helpful when you're shopping online, because it takes the guesswork out completely.
Don't Overlook UV Protection
Sunglasses are a fashion statement, for sure. But they're also doing real work for your eyes. UV exposure over time may contribute to cataracts and other eye issues, and good sunglasses can help block that kind of sun damage. Look for lenses that offer at least 99% UVB and 95% UVA protection.
Higher-quality frames, including many vintage and designer pieces, typically offer strong UV protection built right in. One of the benefits of buying preloved luxury sunglasses is that the craftsmanship is already there. You're not compromising on protection to get the style.
Your Perfect Pair
The best sunglasses are the ones you keep reaching for. The ones that feel like you! Maybe that's a sleek pair of vintage aviators that go with everything. Maybe it's a bold, oversized tortoiseshell that turns heads at the farmers market. Maybe it's a delicate rimless pair you found that just happens to fit perfectly.
Whatever it is, there's something satisfying about finding that perfect look and knowing you'll have it for years. At Current Boutique, we love helping you find exactly that: preloved pieces with great bones, real quality, and a story. Come browse our designer sunglasses and find the pair that feels like you.
