Ask ten women to name their dream bag and you'll get ten different answers. But the same handful of names comes up again and again. At Current Boutique, we watch which designer bags sell fastest, which ones consignors bring in, and which ones shoppers ask us to hold. So when people ask me which designer handbag brands are the most popular, I don't just go by gut feeling.

This guide covers the 15 brands that matter most heading into 2027. For each one, I'll tell you why people want it, the styles to know, and what's changed lately (a lot has: half the big houses have new creative directors). Then we'll talk about which brands hold their value and the bag trends to watch next year.

How we picked the most popular brands

"Popular" can mean a lot of things, so I looked at three of them:

• What people search for. The RealReal's 2026 Resale Report ranks the most-searched luxury brands on its site, and the Lyst Index ranks the hottest brands each quarter.
• What holds its value. Rebag's 2025 Clair report tracks how much of their retail price bags keep on resale.
• What our shoppers actually buy. Over the past year, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Gucci and Kate Spade were the top-selling bag brands on our website.

The investment icons

1. Chanel

Chanel is the dream bag for so many women, and the numbers back it up. It's the most-searched brand on The RealReal and sat at number one on the Lyst Index for Q2 2026.

Founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in 1910, the house is still the definition of timeless femininity. The quilted Classic Flap is one of the most famous bags ever made, with hand-stitched diamond quilting and that interlocking CC closure.

There's a Chanel for every taste. The Boy Bag, named after Coco's great love Boy Capel, is edgier and more modern.

The Wallet on Chain works as a crossbody, a clutch or an evening bag.

And the 2.55 is named for its launch date: February 1955.

What's new: Matthieu Blazy, who made Bottega Veneta a cult favorite, now designs for Chanel. Searches for his name on The RealReal jumped nearly 11,000% in a year, and his Spring–Summer 2027 show introduced 66 new bags. Searches for the Cerf tote are up 176%, according to The RealReal.

2. Hermès

Hermès started in Paris in 1837 as a maker of saddles and harnesses, and that equestrian craftsmanship is still in every hand-stitched bag.

When it comes to holding value, nothing beats it. In Rebag's 2025 report, the Kelly Mini II resold for 282% of its retail price. Yes, that's almost three times what it cost new. The Constance came in at 137%.

The Birkin and Kelly get the headlines, but the Constance, Evelyne and Picotin are wonderful too. For Spring–Summer 2027, Hermès brought back the Ring and Mangeoire and reworked the Toolbox.

3. Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton started in 1854 as a trunk maker, and the famous LV Monogram canvas arrived in 1896. It's one of the most recognized designer handbag brands in the world, and the second most-searched brand on The RealReal.

It's also our best-selling bag brand online. From the classic Speedy to the roomy Neverfull to the structured Petite Malle, there's a Louis for every lifestyle.

The heritage houses with new energy

4. Gucci

Founded in Florence in 1921, Gucci started as a leather goods house with an equestrian streak. You can still see it in the horsebit hardware and the green-red-green web stripe. The Bamboo bag dates all the way back to 1947.

Gucci is bold. The stripe, the tiger head, the bees and snakes: you're making a statement.

The GG Marmont, a quilted shoulder bag with the double-G logo, is the easy everyday classic.

The Dionysus, with its tiger-head closure, is elegant with an edge.

I've always loved the Sylvie: clean leather, a gold buckle and a flash of that signature stripe.

What's new: Demna, the designer behind Balenciaga's biggest hits, showed his first Gucci collection in Milan in February 2026. Gucci is the fourth most-searched brand on The RealReal, and our third best-selling bag brand online.

5. Dior

Christian Dior opened his house in December 1946, and it's had a huge 2026. Dior ranked third on the Lyst Index for Q2 2026.

The Lady Dior was designed in 1994 and named for Princess Diana, who carried it everywhere. The Saddle bag and the Book Tote are modern favorites. Jonathan Anderson, who built Loewe into a powerhouse, debuted at Dior with Spring 2026, and searches for his name on The RealReal are up 158%, Glossy reports.

6. Fendi

Founded in Rome in 1925, Fendi is known for rich leathers, bold color and its double-F logo.

If you love a baguette bag, thank Fendi! Silvia Venturini Fendi designed the Baguette in 1997 to tuck under your arm the way the French carry their bread. It's the most-searched archival bag ever on Vestiaire Collective, according to the platform.

The Peekaboo, with its soft front panel and twist-lock, is the other Fendi icon.

What's new: Maria Grazia Chiuri, formerly of Dior, is now Fendi's creative director. Shop preloved Fendi.

7. Prada

Prada opened in Milan in 1913, but it was the black nylon bags of 1979 and the decades after that made it a household name. Today it's the third most-searched brand on The RealReal.

The Re-Edition shoulder bags bring those nylon classics back, and the Saffiano leather Galleria is a polished office favorite.

8. Miu Miu

Miu Miu, Prada's younger, more playful sister, launched in 1993 and is named after Miuccia Prada's nickname. It's having a huge moment. It ranked second on the Lyst Index for Q2 2026, and its bags kept 104% of their retail price on resale in Rebag's 2025 report, the brand's best ever.

The quiet-luxury favorites

9. The Row

The Row was founded in 2006 by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and named after London's Savile Row. If you love quiet luxury, this is the brand. No logos, just beautiful leather and perfect proportions.

It's new to The RealReal's top 10 most-searched brands this year, and saved searches for its Terrasse bag more than doubled. Its bags kept 97% of retail value on resale in Rebag's report, and the N/S Park Tote kept 146%. Shop preloved The Row.

10. Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta was founded in Vicenza, Italy, in 1966 and is famous for intrecciato, its signature woven leather. No logo needed: the weave is the signature.

The Jodie, the Cassette and the Andiamo are the styles to know. Louise Trotter took over as creative director in 2025.

11. Celine

Celine began in 1945 making made-to-measure children's shoes. Today it's one of the chicest names in bags. Michael Rider debuted as creative director with Spring 2026, and his new Halfmoon bag already holds value well: The RealReal reports it retails for $2,800 and resells around $2,470.

Collectors still hunt for the Phoebe Philo years too. Saved searches for "Phoebe Philo Celine" are up 650%, The RealReal found. The Luggage tote, the Trapeze and the Triomphe are the classics.

12. Loewe

Loewe was founded in Madrid in 1846, making it one of the oldest luxury houses in the world. Its leatherwork is exceptional. The Puzzle bag (2015) is the modern icon, and the Flamenco and Hammock are close behind.

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the duo behind Proenza Schouler, took over in 2025, and saved searches for Loewe on The RealReal are up 88%. Shop preloved Loewe.

13. Saint Laurent

Founded in 1962, Saint Laurent still uses the interlocking YSL logo designed by the artist Cassandre in 1963. Anthony Vaccarello has led the house since 2016, and it ranked fourth on the Lyst Index for Q2 2026.

The Loulou, the Kate and the Le 5 à 7 hobo are the styles everyone wants: sleek, a little sexy and very Parisian.

The smart everyday picks

14. Coach

No list is complete without Coach, and right now it's hotter than it's been in years. Coach was founded in 1941 in a Manhattan workshop, and its leather was inspired by the soft, worn-in feel of a baseball glove.

Coach's revenue grew 24% last year, according to parent company Tapestry. Searches for the Tabby rose 42% in a single quarter, per Lyst.

The Swagger, with its turn-lock closure, is polished and structured.

The Rogue is a roomy everyday tote.

And I still love the Charlie for its vintage feel.

15. Kate Spade

Kate Spade launched in 1993 with one bag, the Sam, and grew into a brand known for playful color, polished shapes and that little spade logo.

It's cheerful without being silly, and very easy to wear.

The Sam is still a clean, roomy classic.

Which designer handbag brands hold their value?

If you think of your bag as an investment, value retention matters. In Rebag's 2025 report, Hermès styles topped the list, with the Kelly Mini II at 282% of retail and the Constance at 137%. By brand, Goyard kept 123%, Miu Miu 104% and The Row 97%. Chanel and Louis Vuitton classics also hold up well.

Bag trends to watch for 2027

From the Spring 2027 runways, here's what's coming:

• Bowler bags and east-west shapes. Long, slim bags were everywhere in New York, Marie Claire reports.
• Red bags. The easiest way to make a neutral outfit pop. See the other colors of the season.
• Fringe and texture. Suede, fringe and woven finishes add movement.
• Hands-free styles and heritage revivals. Crossbodies are still going strong, and archive favorites like the Proenza Schouler PS1 are back, says Coveteur.
• Archive and vintage. Shoppers are hunting for older designer pieces, and that's great news if you love luxury for less.
