Turtlenecks are my favorite layering piece. A basic white turtleneck knit is a wardrobe must-have. Pair it with a plaid skirt and boots for a fall vibe, and then transition it beautifully into winter with more reds, greens, and metallics. 

Turtlenecks are naturally flattering for many women because they draw the eye to the face and jaw. This effect works especially well when you want to emphasize the angularity of your face when layering with heavier outerwear like a trench coat, wool camel coat, or other outerwear.

For a more casual Friendsgiving, pairing a turtleneck with a graphic tee or sweater is an adorable way to create a more polished, purposeful – yet still ultra-cozy – vibe.

Keep it simple with a jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are the easiest way to look refined. Opt for a roomy jumpsuit with a bit of give so you can have an extra slice of pie, or go for something more structured for a work-to-play outfit. Cinch it at the waist with a belt or wrap to create a more streamlined silhouette.

Denim jumpsuits are particularly trendy for fall 2023. Denim has a casual, laidback vibe, but a structured denim jumpsuit offers a well-composed look.

Make room for pumpkin pie with an oversized sweater

Friendsgiving is about food and friendship, and your fashion choices should reflect that vibe – what says comfort more than an oversized sweater? Throw an oversized sweater over jeans, leggings, or leather pants for an easy go-to look that screams cool girl. To avoid looking frumpy, balance your outfit with this easy formula: oversized top + slim or fitted pants, or vice versa.

For a more refined but equally comfortable look, throw your oversized sweater over a pleated or satin skirt. Bonus points for rich, autumnal colors and leather boots.

Take a classic sweater and make it edgy with a little artful layering. Layer a chunky sweater over a long button-down paired with stockings and thigh highs for a chic, relaxed look (that’s forgiving if you eat an extra serving or two). 

Show off with a knit dress

A fitted knit dress is like a warm hug from your wardrobe. Invest in a basic, flattering style that you can dress up or down with your shoes and accessories. I love adding a belted waist for a feminine silhouette, and then I match my shoes and purse to the belt for a cohesive look.

There are a lot of different styles of knit dresses, so choose one that flatters your body type and color season. Don’t choose something too tight or oversized – the goal is to feel comfortable and confident!

Knit dresses can also be a great base layer for layering. Add a trench coat or blazer for a work-ready outfit that easily transitions from business meetings to Friendsgiving.

Pattern with plaid

Plaid is forever the pattern of fall, and fall 2023 is no different. The key to effectively combining fabrics lies in balancing contrasting textures. Start a statement texture, like denim or suede, then pair that with simpler textures. For example, if you’re wearing a chunky knit sweater, you might want sleek bottoms like leather pants.

Mixing heavy textures with lighter ones also creates an appealing contrast. For example, a faux fur coat looks stunning against a silky blouse. Be sure to keep the color palette harmonious so the textures can do the talking.
